WHEELING, WV – The Wheeling Nailers, the ‘AA’ affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, have signed forwards Erik Johnson and Mark Nebus it was announced today by team President Jim Brooks. As per club policy, no further terms were disclosed.
Johnson, 27, will begin his third professional season and first with the Nailers this year. He spent 2007-08 split between the New Mexico Scorpions and the Youngstown Steelheads of the CHL. He posted 37 points (11g, 26a) in a combined 55 games.
“Erik has tremendous speed and he can be trusted to play both ends of the ice,” said Nailers Head Coach Greg Puhalski.
Wheeling will become his fourth ECHL team since he finished with Mercyhurst College in 2006. He joined the San Diego Gulls after the end of his collegiate season before playing with both Pensacola and Cincinnati during the 2006-07 campaign.
Nebus, 26, joins the Nailers from the International Hockey League where he played for Port Huron and Kalamazoo last season. Between his two stops, he played 68 games and amassed 90 penalty minutes. He chipped in with a goal and five assists as well.
“Mark is a tenacious competitor who’s not afraid to mix it up,” said Puhalski. The two will be reunited after Nebus joined a Puhalski-coached Chicago Wolves team at the tail end of the 2006-07 season. He played in five regular season games and five playoff games for the Wolves after competing at Wayne State University.
