Wheeling, WV--The Nailers got a 5-2 victory
over the Cinncinati Cyclones at WesBanco Arena
on Pink In The Rink Night Saturday in front
of a nice turnout of 3372 fans. Kevin Schmidt
and Jordan Fox led the way with two goals apiece
while Slavomir Tomko added another. Jordan Parise
made several fine saves in picking up the win.
Fox scored his 4th and 5th of the season including
an empty-netter in the closing moments to seal
the victory. Tomko had his 3rd of the year and
scored in his second game in a row. Schmidt
scored his 2nd and 3rd of the season and also
blasted home what would prove to be the game-winning
goal.
The Nailers picked up their 2nd win in a row
to improve to 7-9-2 and also picked up their
first win of the season against Cincinnati.
Wheeling is 5-2-1 in their last 8 games.
Immediately after the game the team’s
pink jerseys were auctioned off to the fans
with the proceeds going to benefit breast cancer
patients and facilities in the Ohio Valley.
It’s an annual fund-raising event for
the Nailers that has generated tens-of-thousands
of dollars for this worthy cause through the
years.
Trailing 2-0 after one period, the Nailers
turned up the pressure in the second and took
control resulting in a 3 goal outburst in a
stretch of 1:50 all on powerplays. Jordan Fox
put the Nailers on the board at 10:19 from the
top of the crease for his 4th goal of the season.
Ryan Hillier and Chris Capraro each picked up
an assist.
The Nailers took advantage of back to back
5 on 3 power plays immediately after that. Slavomir
Tomko fired it from the high slot past Cincinnati
goalie Robert Mayer to tie the score 2-2. assisted
by Thomas Beauregard and Andrew Lord. Continuing
a 5 on 3 power play Kevin Schmidt blasted it
over the right shoulder of Mayer and gave the
Nailers a 3-2 lead. The Nailers went 3 for 7
on the power play and the Cyclones went 1 for
4 on the power play.
Later in the second Schmidt took advantage
of Mayer who thought the puck was secure after
stopping an Aaron Clarke breakaway try. Schmidt
was able to jam in his 3rd goal of the season
and second of the game for his first multi-goal
game as a pro.
Wheeling’s Parise made several nice saves
on the Cyclones through much of the 3rd to maintain
the two-goal margin.
The Cincinnati Cyclones took an early lead
in the first with two goals in less than a minute
by Brett Robinson, one being a power play goal.
The Nailers played solid periods and finished
checks to improve to 7-9-2. The Nailers went
3 for 7 on the power play while the Cyclones
went 1 for 4. Shots on goal were even at 33
per side.
The two teams took an early intermission with
2:29 remaining in the 2nd period due to a broken
glass pane. After resurfacing the ice and replacing
the panel they played the remainder of the middle
period and then switched sides and went immediately
onto the 3rd period without another intermission.
