Trenton, NJ – Andrew Lord scored
the game-winner in the 4th round of the shootout
to clinch a road victory for the Wheeling Nailers
6-5 at the Trenton Devils Wednesday night.
Thomas Beauregard led the way in regulation
with a pair of goals to move into the league
lead with 6 on the season. Aaron Clarke, T.J.
Fox and Corey Couturier also lit the lamp for
the Nailers. For Clarke and Couturier it was
their 1st of the year while Fox picked up his
4th goal of the season along with a couple nice
assists on both Beauregard goals.
Wheeling led 5-2 after two periods and seemed
to have the game well in hand but the Trenton
Devils scored 3 goals in a 5 minute stretch
early in the 3rd to tie the game at 5-5.
Pierce Norton scored for the Nailers in the
first round of the shootout and then Joey Haddad
and Andrew Lord scored back to back in the 3rd
and 4th rounds to seal the win and get the 2
points for the Nailers.
Adam Berkhoel came on in relief of Jordan Parise
and picked up his first win as a Wheeling Nailer.
Gerald Coleman relieved Dave Caruso after two
periods and was pinned with the loss for the
Trenton Devils.
The Nailers improved to 2-5-0 on the year while
the T-Devils fell to 1-2-2.
Trenton initially led 1-0 but that 1st period
advantage lasted only 28 seconds before Lane
Caffaro would center to Kevin Schmidt who would
smartly flip the puck over to Aaron Clarke blasting
home the one-timer up the right-wing to tie
it at 1-1.
T.J. Fox redirected a blast from center point
by Alex Grant at 13:39 of the 1st on the power
play to give the Nailers their first lead of
the game.
Wheeling extended the lead to 3-1 mid-way through
the 2nd period when Thomas Beauregard and T.J.
Fox nicely executed a 2-on-1 rush. Fox up the
left-wing centered for Beauregard cutting right
up the middle who fired it home for his first
goal of the night.
Trevor Kell got it back for the Devils a couple
minutes later to cut Wheeling’s lead 3-2.
The Nailers finished with back to back goals
3 minutes apart at the end of the 2nd period.
Ferris State product Corey Couturier shot it
from the right-wing wall and deflected it in
off the stick of Devils goalie Dave Caruso for
his first lamplighter as a pro player at 16:08
giving the Nailers a 4-2 lead.
With 1:02 remaining in the 2nd Beauregard found
the net for his first Nailers multi-goal game
when he blasted it top shelf from the left-wing
going across the body glove-hand side on Caruso
to give Wheeling a 5-2 lead at the 2nd break.
Trenton outshot the Nailers 17-6 in the 3rd
period in a frantic comeback effort that saw
them score 3 goals in just 4:18. Matt Cohen
scored at 4:03 of the 3rd cutting the lead to
5-3. Tim Kunes wristed one past Jordan Parise
from the high slot at 7:07 to make it a one
goal game. Parise made way for Adam Berkhoel
at that point and a little over a minute later
a long rebound found its way to the stick of
Jeremy Akeson on the base of the left-wing circle.
His shot appeared to deflect off the back of
Berkhoel to tie the game at 5-5 at 8:21.
The Devils kept coming with several rushes looking
to take the lead but the Nailers defense was
able to jump on several rebounds while blocking
away passes on a couple of rushes all anchored
by Berkhoel making several key saves. Wheeling
hung on to get the game to overtime and also
had a few chances to beat Coleman on the other
side.
After a scoreless overtime with both teams racing
back and forth with several rushes Wheeling
was able to get the key second point in the
shootout.
Trenton outshot the Nailers 37-30 in the game.
Wheeling had jumped on the Devils at the start
outshooting them 14-6 in the opening period.
Wheeling went 1-for-6 on the power play while
Trenton was 2-for-4. The five goals in regulation
was the most this season for the Nailers. Beauregard
had the team’s first multi-goal game and
took over the league lead in goals tied with
Alaska’s John Lammers.
Tom Harrison returned to the lineup for the
Nailers to face his former team having served
a two game suspension stemming from a slashing
major last Friday. He mixed it up with Myles
Stoesz of the Devils and almost went at it a
couple other times. Harrison picked up 7 penalty
minutes on the night and is 2nd in the ECHL
with 42.
Ryan Schnell for Wheeling and Dan Eves for Trenton
got in a fight midway through the 2nd period
that earned both players game misconducts.
Scratches for the Nailers included Scott Kalinchuk,
Slavomir Tomko and Jordan Fox.

member of the ECHL will be travelling to Wheeling
