The Golden Spike
One of the most important achievements of the 19th century
was the the construction of the transcontinental railroad
linking the East and West Coasts. Because a railroad must be
built to last, steel spikes were used to hold the miles of
tracks together. In fact, the spikes were so important to
the makeup of the railroad that a golden spike was used to
commemorate the completion of the project.
The economy of the Ohio Valley has long been connected to
activity on its own railroads. With the passing of the
centuries, the structure of our economy has seen many
changes and the spikes which hold it together are no longer
made of steel. We must look to our historical past, however
as we plan for our future. The Wheeling Nailers have adopted
the golden spike as a symbol of our efforts at contributing
to the continued revitalization of the city.
How you Can Help
The Golden Spike Association Ticket for Kids has been
developed to bring together an elite group of local business
people, corporations , foundations, and individuals who are
proud of our history and want to support the reconstruction
of the region. City officials are working to keep young
professionals here and make the Ohio Valley an even better
place to live, work, and play.
As
a member of the Golden Spike Association Ticket for Kids
program, we are asking you to provide financial "spike"
supporting Nailers Hockey and the redevelopment of Wheeling.
Your tax-deductible contribution to the Community Foundation
for the Ohio Valley will be used to purchase Nailers tickets
for charity, non-profit organization, or schools of your
choice.
